Has anyone any information on restricting access to undesirable Internet sites when running Linux? I know various programs are available for use with Microsoft OS's but that defeats to object of running Linux somewhat. tia Norman
with apologies if I mentioned this before... I downloaded a trial version of netnanny. Found I could export all the banned sites....and imported them into our Netscape server. You can add such lists to squid...but I have not done so....as we use netscape proxy. Of course...most/many schools internet providers have some form of filtering available. It also helps to 'force' the search engine to be one of those 'family friendly' types - and add the others to your list of banned sites. (Actually we don't do this...) Of course - be aware that there are several sites which will fetch pages off further sites - re 'head' them and generate a page which will then display - or even email them to recipients. How did you do this? Usually such companies try hard to make sure that their lists can't simply be exported...

Though remember that "family friendly" might not equate to "school friendly" there being plenty of places which are inappropriate since kids waste time on them rather than doing work as well as potentially things related to news, politics, history, etc. which whilst appearing in a commercial software block list might actually be relevent to the curriculum.
