Hi There! Just thought I'd introduce myself and give you an idea of my Linux project - any comments gratefully received btw. At the moment we are running four NT 4.0 servers on a school wide 10/100 mbps cat 5 switched network. We also have one Linux (Red Hat 5.2) server running on this system as well. I am about to start a project to create a network of four/five Linux servers (Suse 6.3 and Red Hat 6.1) and two workstations (Caldera Openlinux and Win '95) to investigate replacing our NT 4.0 servers and Win '95/'98 systems. This network will consist of :- 1 ICL Pentium 133 running Red Hat 6.1 with 2*Netgear FA310 10/100 Mbps cards (Primary DNS for Linux Domain earthforce.cxm, Primary NIS server and general web server (Apache)) 1 ICL Pentium 100 running Suse 6.3 with Apache, MySQL and PHP for the development of web based admin, reports and target setting systems. 2 ICL Pentium 75's running Suse 6.3 / Red Hat 6.1 with Samba to provide file storage for pupils (Linked via NFS, will be secondary NIS servers) 1 ICL 486SX/25 Running Red Hat 6.1 to act as a secondary DNS Server to the ICL P133 for the Linux Domain earthforce.cxm. 1 Elonex Lumina MediaGX system running Caldera Openlinux (to act as a workstation evaluation) 1 Elonex Lumina MediaGX system running Windows'95 (to act as a workstation evaluation) It is my intention to link the servers together using NIS and NFS, to ensure that users can log on from anywhere in the school. The P133 will be the primary server for these functions. The system will be administered remotely via http using WebMin (http://www.webmin.com). Both the Windows '95 and Caldera based workstations will be running Staroffice 5.1 (courtesy of Sun / Star Division) and Netscape Communicator. As I'm a Linux newbie this is going to be a lot of fun (If I can find the time to complete it!) If this test is successful then it will be deployed using IBM Netfinity 3000's (I hope) sometime during the coming year. This is just a very broad outline of what I intend to do so any comments or other helpful hints will be appreciated. Alan Harris Network Manager Bryngwyn School alanh@bryngwyn.carmarthen.sch.uk
