Just installed/ upgraded to Suse9.1 Not sure how much of it is due to product improvement or my expertise growing.. but it did seem to go well. Two network cards...NAT with masquerading, remote telnet access, remote xdm access, etc. Hoped samba 3 would give better functionality and it looked promising when I tried to join our existing NT domain. However, browsing finds the windows network, and our domains, and the stations - but falls over after I get challenged for username and password. Anyone had windbind working on this? Still can't get PC stations to connect to POP3 or IMAP on the LInux box - refusing the username and password. TV card recognised - but seems to cause a lockup when you try to use it. -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School
Alan I think you may be experiencing the same problem as I had when I upgraded. Authentication no longer accepts cleartext passwords by default for email any more. I upgraded from 6.3 to 9. I don't know when this was changed. You can change this behaviour if you want. This thread might explain it better http://www.netsys.com/suse-linux-security/2004/01/msg00228.html HTH. OK read the articles. Don't really understand certificates - although I understand the principle. Do I need to pay for one? If not how do I generate one? Will this work with non-roaming profiles in a school with Outlook Express. Seems like a whole load of unwanted difficulty. Any chance of a step by step guide as to how to proceed? BTW - I worked in Burry Port for a short while - at the Power Station during my student years (probably closed down now!) On Tue 25 May, mike rees wrote:

Alan I chickened out and changed the configuration file to accept plaintext passwords. I realise that this is a security issue but mail can only be retrieved internally so no passwords are being transmitted over the internet...and I trust people on the inside implicitly! ;-) Seriously though, the biggest problem I have with passwords is not them being intercepted on the wire but them been willingly revealed by the staff! BTW Burry Port Power station was demolished in 1990. The Millennium Coastal Path runs through it now. -- Mike Rees Ysgol Glanymor School Heol Elfed Burry Port Llanelli SA16 0AL

It completely p0rked my home setup when i installed it. All went well till i installed the Driverloader module for my belkin wireless. It wouldn't boot to a prompt even after setting to the lowest RC pre-shutdown. Little did i know that they've included the other free wrapper with 9.1 with instructions on how to install it. I've since installed windoze on there for sake of simplicity and threw the linux drives in my other windoze box and used Coppernix to mount the drives to get me data off. :( Perhaps i'll comeback SuSE 10.0? :p ____________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
