RE: [suse-linux-uk-schools] Microsoft stole my mother (was StarOf fice)
I have to confirm that this is so - we have a few transatlantic students, and they say that they have to use Excel with forms & modules, using vast, flat tables as relational databases. And before anyone argues, yes you can, yes it does work, yes there are serious limitations for /real/ applications, but its good enough for the course.
I teach As/A2 ICT, and Computing. I teach students about ER diagrams and data definition tables; I think I need a *real* relational database to do that efficiently. Exam boards set work which involves creating forms and subforms. There is NO WAY I would ask students to use EXcel for this sort of stuff. Yes, anything is possible if you're prepared to try hard enough, but there's usually a 'sensible' way of doing it, and that's not Excel. I think I'd rather revive my licance for an old DOS-based Paradox than move to Excel. -- ******************************************************************************** All mail sent and received may be examined to prevent transmission of unacceptable material.
