My server rebuild is well under way and I have tightened up the firewall and general security (I hope). I did notice before I had it re-imaged however
My apologies in not getting back to you sooner on this, Paul. Things have been somewhat hectic of late. I'll respond in due course about that.
that there was indeed a chroot directory in the httpd folder that was presumably the offending article. Any suggestions from the floor as to how to stop this happening again?
Don't run httpd in a chroot? Seriously -- that directory is not officially part of the FSH/LSB so it has no official status in being there. The only reason it would be there is if you were running part of, or all of apache inside a choot-jail. There's perfectly good reasons why you would want to do this -- security being the most obvious. I can only conclude that some installer/configuration program has done this on your behalf?
