following on from the 'rather successful' workshops in Sandwell, there will be another two workshops at Bryngwyn School, Llanelli, details below. Due to the facilities being freely available etc, there will be no charge for this event, but again places will be limited.
i am hoping that copies of the latest K12LTSP distribution, bootable network
Just need a source for ROMS, mostly RTL8139...
cards and new terminal hardware will also be available.
Been playing with the disks from Sandwell. A few problems, such as Backspace key not working (maybe the correct keymapping to chose is not obvious). Had to shuffle a few UIDs and GIDs around, since they conflicted with those from our NIS server. Can't get RHN registration to work. It requires to be able to make a connection to 216.148.218.160:443, no apparent way to get it to use a proxy for HTTPS, can't HTTPS to transparent proxy, just as well we still have a working ISDN connection. Still looking for XFree version 4, assume RPMs built for generic RH6 will work. Since some of the cards I have will only do VGA with version 3, but can manage better with version 4.
if anyone else thinks they may have 6 or more people, (from the LEA, other schools etc) interested in looking at the solution or have a lab to convert/put back on the road, let me know, hopefully its turning into the beginnings of a European tour....!, well this is already the second country :-)
I'm trying to convince people here. We have two rooms of 28 machines each we are planning to update. The cost difference (even without haggling with supplier over price) is about £10,000 between continuing with kind of Windows workstations we are using now and a terminal server approach. The only problem is how to run existing Windows apps. Does anyone have experience of using Win4Lin/Vmware/WINE in a thin client environment? e.g. is a 1.5GHz CPU with 1G of RAM sufficent for 28 clients (and a printer)? A little more tricky appears to handling several smaller groups of terminals from a single server -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
