Tried the "check if xdm ....." commands on the server and got the same grey x windows with nothing on it apart form the cursor X. Under etc/X11 there is just the SUSE window manager. Is XDM then a package I just nned to install from the CDs? James

Yup. Follow the instructions in my posting (pasted again below for your convenience) and you should see the xdm login prompt instead (provided xdm is running on your server, of course: see point 2 for how to start it if it isn't)
