We've rolled out Open Office on all our dektop machines (Win NT, Win2K and LTSP). Everyone is happy except that they are starting to scream for database functionality - by which they actually machine something like MS Access.
I've played with an ODBC connection to a locally hosted MySQL setup on a Windows box and the 'Form Autopilot' looks like it will do what we need.
We have a Linux box suitably equipped to host MySQL databases for all the kids. I need to tackle the Windows clients first, and need to set things up so that when a kid logs in and runs Open Office they are automatically presented with their own database as a datasource.
Has anyone done this yet? If so, advice would be most welcome.

The database issue has been brought up with OO.org and its on the to-do list but I'm not sure for when! One of the reasons I'm developing the INGOT certification scheme is to generate some income to fund this type of developement. If anyone is interested in an internationally backed IT certificate for competence (similar to MS MOUS but a lot less expensive and with proceeds going to Open Source developement) E-mail me and I'll put you on my list. (Phil you are already on the list.) I expect to be get more detailed proposals out in the next couple of weeks. This is a way of getting all your KS4 pupils a certificate in IT skills without having to put them all through GCSE or an expensive alternative. Regards, -- IanL
