The other benefits of VNC are that you can put VNC servers on a windows box (and again I think Mac's too) and remotely control those. [Simon Wood] One of the Major advantages that VNC has over X is that the link is stateless. So when your Windows machine crashes you do not halt the applications that were running on the linux box and they will still be there after you have rebooted Windows.
However I believe that the link is less secure....
