In Surrey the SEGfL are proposing to connect us to a 2MB/s link (courtesy of RM)
hi Derek speaking in ex-Becta mode.... ;-) the link i think you will be getting will be infact BT's MetroVPN 2Mbps service, as supplied by RM (ie services on-top, such as web hosting....). Its a contended service, performance subject to 'site survey'. but will be web-hosting on a system only using Frontpage
support (no cgi etc.). Does anyone have experience of this product, any security issues which need to be addressed etc?
yuk....no cgi? hmmmm seems somewhat inflexible perhaps the RM IFL people on the this can explain why. Frontpage is easy to publish, not sure whether its only supported by IIS, not Apache.
Secondly, can anyone tell me definitively what the government position regarding document transmission formats is? I understand that they have a policy that only non-proprietry formats should be used (e.g. RTF) but I've lost/can't find any official info. Did Becta have something on this once?
there has been work on this during the last year and i did have some input to a document on interchange formats pertaining to the IMS (rather than MIS) group which did make comments about using RTF, but also Word documents (as they were infact a de facto standard). My comments at the time were for them to stick with the likes of RTF and PDF (although the latter has some issues). There were other comments relating to ODBC drivers etc, although the thorny issue of SIMS will prevent any open recognised formats being present.
See you at BETT?
indeed, would it worth organising some form of Linux / Open Source 'event' at BETT, a gathering on the Microsoft or DfEE stands, all brandishing copies of our unwanted Windows licenses? Anyform of get together would be nice, choose one of the days ? regards Malcolm ------------------------------- Dr Malcolm Herbert (still just) Head of Technology R&D, Becta 02476 847126 Mob: 07801 612438 -------------------------------
