Hi! At the linkat project we have a very good experience on using LTSP. One reason of such a success was that the administration became much easier than before. You need to connect the server through Gigabit. The clients do not need to go through Gigabit, but the server do. Look for a switch that can handle that. The server should be a good PC, as it is the key point and also the bottleneck of the design. If the server crashes, you lose the whole classroom. So, my advice is to get a brand new PC, with at least 4GB of RAM (this should be enough for 20 computers), dual core and RAID hard discs (it can be SATA discs). Some people would recommend you to buy a real server. It is not a bad idea, but you should look at the costs. Then you can use all the other computers as clients, even old computers that you may not be using. You could even buy thin clients (150€?) . I did a research some months ago about the costs of implementing classrooms using LTSP. I am not sending it because it is in Spanish, but to sum it up, you could have three times more computers by using LTSP, as well as less maintenance problems. jordi massaguer i pla http://jordimassaguerpla.blogspot.com/ openSUSE member Novell Certified Linux Professional 10 ----- Mensaje original ----

How well does kiwi-ltsp perform with audio and video applications? Is it already possible to run such applications for example locally on the client?
Audio, local usb disks, printers work very well, video is bit laggy as expected, but can be remedied to some extent by using LDM_DIRECTX, if security is not of concern.
BTW, KIWI-LTSP and iTalc make a great combination for administering classroom, they are both integrated in openSUSE-EDU distribution :)
Cheers
