Hi! What do you think about temporarily building Contrib for 11.1 (until 11.2 is out and Contrib is branched). This would make its usage and testing easier for those who don't run Factory. -- Best regards / s pozdravem Petr Uzel, Packages maintainer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: puzel@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 964 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+help@opensuse.org

We can extend you sentence also for openSUSE 11.0 and 10.3 - right? Basically - there were discussions about contrib-backports. It may be nice-to-have -- but the main point why it was not made originally is because no one wanted to test newer contrib packages with older dependencies. (on distros such as SUSE 10.3)
From user point of view there is a need for backports. But stability was most important.

I always test my packages on older versions, just not that much factory ... Regards, Matthias -- Matthias Bach www.marix.org „Der einzige Weg, die Grenzen des Möglichen zu finden, ist ein klein wenig über diese hinaus in das Unmögliche vorzustoßen.“ - Arthur C. Clarke

OK, you are right that my proposal goes against what has been already discussed. However, my intention was to enable it only temporarily until Contrib becomes more mature (~stable branch for 11.1 will be created).

If some packages do not build against 11.1, it wouldn't mind (no need to fix that). On the other hand, I admit that if some package won't work as expected, it might discourage people from using Contrib.

I can easily live without that, it was just a proposal. Building for more targets will bring a lot of maintenance effort, with a little gain for openSUSE. I think we have to leave the Contrib close with the current openSUSE:Factory, but I agree with Petr that 11.1 build target can be an exception from this rule. It should help us to start. BTW: I suppose rules for Contrib could be more flexible than for openSUSE and version update in released/frozen repository should be possible too in some cases. Seems that discussion stalled but there were no objections against temporarily adding 11.1. I just did that. 11.0 older are NO GO. -- Best Regards / S pozdravom, Pavol RUSNAK SUSE LINUX, s.r.o Package Maintainer Lihovarska 1060/12 PGP 0xA6917144 19000 Praha 9, CR prusnak[at]suse.cz http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-contrib+help@opensuse.org
