If the library follows the naming policy and has a different soname, so it can be installed besides the one in the core distribution, I see no problem.

I wouldn't have a problem with it - unless I miss some complications ;)
From my POW there should one complication: Packages with complicated dependencies - for example KDE applications. I can imagine that newest package will need a newest KDE(lib), and we will probably not want to update a half of KDE stack in Contrib. But this would be a curiosity, not a regular problem.
