[opensuse-conference] [osc13] Network
Hello everybody, I just received confirmation about setting up high speed internet at the venue. (Greece unfortunately doesn't provide adequate speed for home or even business usage so we had to come up with a special idea to cover this.) Relevant trello task [1]. Internet will be provided by the organization [2] that provides internet to Greek universities. They will set up a wireless link between a near by university (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - AUTH) and our venue. They have already done a site survey and have decided its doable. We will be offered an internet speed of minimum 100mbit, but possibly we will ask for double - it doesn't make any difference to them. What they offer is the wireless link set up (including equipment that will be put on the roof of venue - antennas etc-, the manpower to put everything together and any internal setup they need to do in order to provide us with IPs). The venue is informed and agreed, and we have already visited the site for this purpose with a representative of AUTH who did the survey to determine if the wireless link is possible. To put it very simply, their responsibility ends when they provide us with the cable from the antenna coming down to the venue. What we do with that connection, how we set it up, how we manage the wireless connection to attendees, what kind of equipment we use for switches and Access Points inside the venue, or how we share that connection between attendees and video upload for streaming, that's 100% on us. On the local side of volunteers, even though we have people with Computer Science degree and even networking specialization, the 300 people that will use wireless connection during the conference need some special handling which we cannot undertake 100%. The internet sponsor has asked us to tell them how we plan to arrange networking inside the venue, prior to them starting setting up the wireless link, since they need to do some work and they don't want it to be in vain. What we need: ---------------------- 1. Make a full list of the equipment (switches, Access Points etc) we need, with specifications based on our needs (we will then search for options on how to get that: rent or get it sponsored) 2. An actual and detailed plan in written of how the setup is going to be implemented, so that we can send it asap to the sponsor. 3. The person that can answer the above, who should be at the venue sometime in advance to do the setup of the network (of course local volunteers will help, but someone needs to lead), coordinate with the local team for whatever we need to prepare in advance, and of course be present during the conference in case problems rise. Options: ------------ 1. Most possible scenario, someone from greek foss community will help with that (I already have a couple of people in mind that have the necessary professional experience) - help as in volunteer and fully take care of it and be present during the event. 2. Being summer and all that, I am not sure what those people's plans are yet. I feel just fine paying someone to handle this. 3. Someone of YOU know how to do this and all our problems are, almost, solved :) I am looking forward to ideas/suggestions.
