Hello, I have seen the work that Carlos is putting into making a logo and it is evolving nicely. I wanted to contribute to his idea with another version based on his work. Please take a look I tried reducing visual noise from the image and use a more concise color palette. If you notice on the first email, I explained that we can add more things like our motto and so on. But I did not want to do that unless it is supported by the rest of the team. About simplicity, let's only make sure that we don't make our tshirts lose focus. It is only a tshirt. Half of the people will not read any of the text that we place in there, and it is just a utilitarian piece of clothing to denote who is who at the conference. I would not want our tshirts to be added so many thing so it will look like a Christmas tree. We also need to think of the cost of adding more things. Everything we add comes at a cost and I would prefer to show our design on other things, such as our posters, web site and so on. Think of the SUSE tshirts, for example. You do not find anything there but a tiny logo on the chest. It does not look like a car racer's jacket. Hi, Sorry for sending this so close to the IRC meeting. Wanted to get this out earlier but I've been really sick the last couple of days, just starting to feel a bit better today. Unless there is strong objection the CfP team has come up with the following plan. We will call for proposals for 4 tracks with the following definitions (no particular order): End user track (Geeko Enthusiast): The user track provides the opportunity for the power users of any application to share their knowledge and share the tricks they use to get the most out of the applications they use. Know of a non obvious but very useful feature, present it's usage to fellow Geekos and users in this track. Topics include but are not limited to, applications, desktop environments, multimedia solutions and games. Business track (Geeko for suits): The business track provides the opportunity for those that use openSUSE and/or FOSS in their business to describe the unique challenges they face in using FOSS. This includes but is not limited to issues and solutions of interfacing with regulatory institutions, other business, training of staff, and changing technology course. Community and Project (Geekos around the world): Sessions in this area should focus on project and community activities, including but not limited to project governance, marketing, artwork advocate reports. Technology & Development (Geeko tech): Sessions in this area should focus on system technology and distribution development. Including but not limited to software packaging, development/testing/debugging tools/practices/methods. Infrastructure software, deployment strategies and monitoring. We would like to start accepting submissions in OSEM starting January 20th. We want to start accepting proposals on on February 14th, this is about 2/3 way through the submission period and we would like to close CfP on February 28, roughly 8 weeks prior to the event. If the program is not full by February 28 we are more than happy to accept "late" submissions until about 2 weeks prior to the event. It has been very interesting to watch how the logo evolved through various proposals, and we think that in the end the last one is the best one. The motto we chose is: "The Strength To Change" It seems fitting because it is both tied to changes that are being discussed on the project ML - topics that will no doubt be present at the conference, but also to the shield (logo) - which is an object behind which one stands strong, and it also helps one push forward. Hey all, Ivan can you please make an account in OSEM [1] and let me know your email so that I can give you the necessary access? If you all agree, I will make sure everyone is added in cfp(a)opensuse.org mailing list, so that we can continue program discussions over there. And here's a brief description on what is going to happen in OSEM that relates to the program committee: - In OSEM we will set up the types of *tracks* we want and the *types* of proposals we look for (talks, workshops etc) along with their duration. - People will submit their proposal (choosing the type of proposal they wish to have, adding a brief description of their proposal and a short bio of themselves). - We, the program committee, will distribute proposals into the appropriate tracks and vote on proposals (I hope this will be integrated in our instance of OSEM soon. Henne is it you whome I have to bother with this [2]?). - There will probably be some irc meeting to make final decisions and accept or not proposals. [For the evaluation of proposals, the options are to put a proposal under review, accept it without sending an email to the submitter, accept it with email sending to the submitter, reject it with or without email. All actions are reversible. I wouldn't worry much about changing the state of the proposals. During the irc meeting I can do the acceptances and rejections as we discuss. ] - Then the accepted proposals must be put into a schedule. Note: Submitted proposals are referred as 'Events' in OSEM. If you are unclear on where to find each of those steps described, please drop an email here or ping me online to further explain, so that we get ready. Hey, I worked on a simpler design this time than the other two proposals. I was given some tips and this is what came out. I will happily participate in Program Committee as well as help out with announcement drafting, OSEM, etc. Also it could be a good practice to make a call for the things you need, for example call for program committee, call for volunteers, etc... That way, people that couldn't make it to a specific meeting can stil sign up for tasks :) [Let's make sure that such emails go both to project and conference mailing lists] Going through the meeting's logs (btw for whomever didn't attend and is anxious to read: http://paste.opensuse.org/94788412) I have made some notes (or rather draft notes that is) which you can find here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n4GHELOKpL3qo1SpzNoUDLY8hd-jh5nGiY_2EJT… It's a long text but I think you will find at least some of that information quite useful. I have also seen that you are super anxious about the website (I totally get it, I was like that too). Don't be. As soon as we prepare some moto and logo and straighten up a few things, the website might even magically appera one sunny morning :) My point being that we already have the infrastructure set (unlike other conferences) and we can't really have the new looks of our website until we have some actual content to put in it. Just to make sure we are on the same page... We need to: - start drafting announcements (oSC14 dates, CfP opens...), - find a moto/theme for oSC14 (I would again suggest having a separate email thread for that so that all our community can get involved), - finalize artwork (first of all logo and then some promo material for FOSDEM - poster, cube perhaps...), - have website & OSEM up&running with the above info. Regarding sponsorships that were also discussed, I am happy to help out on that as well. I do have some experience with sponsors in general. Let's discuss more about it at some other point and get started. In my opinion, there should definitely be a local person keeping track of things (probably the same person approaching local sponsors) and we can together set sponsorship levels and what we can offer to our sponsors. Speaking of which, I am all for having a business track, keeping in mind that this is an openSUSE Community conference and as such the talks must somehow relate to the opensuse and its community. We don't even have to name it as a business track if it makes people uncomfortable. But our sponsors could in fact have something interesting to present to openSUSE community. I think we should clearly communicate 2 things to sponsors: - that their sponsorship does not guarantee them a presentation/workshop slot and that they should apply for it like everybody else (through osem) and have the program committee (which is independent from the sponsors committee) decide. - and that their talk/workshop should definitely have to do with open source and relate to openSUSE.
