[opensuse-buildservice] opensuse evergreen 11.1 would be a nice build service target
I would advocate for opensuse evergreen 11.1 as a new build service target. I failed in building some of my packages on SLED 11 because of failed dependencies, but was succesful on the eldest availible opensuse target. Maybe I did not get how to also use packages from the SLE SDK. But - as SLED 11 seems to be similar to openSUSE 11.1 versionwise - it would be a good starting point to use those packages as replacement for the missing ones in SLED. Also there ARE people outside that do not upgrade openSUSE (because of old Hardware e.g.) and are now very happy with openSUSE 11.1 evergreen. In my eyes these are 2 good reasons to wish a openSUSE 11.1 evergreen target in the Open Build Service. actually even Evergreen 11.1 is not supported anymore since some time unfortunately so it's not really a candidate as a targer project anymore. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+owner@opensuse.org

What was the point of calling it Evergreen in the first place then? Or was 11.1 never even used as an Evergreen base in the first place? I don't remember when it started. In any event, Johannes did you try building against DISCONTINUED_openSUSE_11.1_Update_standard ? That has been available all along and should remain available indefinitely. I build many packages against several discontinued repos from 10.0 to 12.1 Those packages then install without problem on production 11.1 boxes. -- bkw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+owner@opensuse.org

The point was that there was an additional year of maintenance for it. So in sum there was three years. And since I was alone doing it, it wasn't possible to do it for a longer time. Hi Wolfgang, You made a couple of people happy by doing evergreen 11.1. Thanks a lot for doing it one year. No one would ask you to maintain 11.1. evergreen in your spare time. My point was that keeping evergreen versions running that match their SLE counterparts would add value to SLE, as people can build more packages for SLE in the build service. This could make Evergreen a business case for SUSE indirectly by making SLE more attractive. Johannes On Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 07:35:58AM +0100, Wolfgang Rosenauer wrote:

Actually SLE11 drifted away far too much from 11.1 by service packs already. Both are and were not comparable anymore in the end since even a lot of base packages were updated in SLE11. Evergreen was not designed to be a binary compatible platform from SLE. I would actually love to have something like that but SUSE up to now disagrees that this is a business case. But this discussion is far beyond -buildservice and we had some at the openSUSE conference but w/o a final status. Probably. The DISCONTINUED namespace is not mine.
Also, there was any kind of announcement?

Specially more explicit. This (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-announce/2012-11/msg00000.html) is the perfect way: "With the release of ruby on Monday 5th of November the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE 11.4 has ended." I know the exact date and even the latest released patch. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+owner@opensuse.org

There was a grace period when someone else wanted to take over. Since this didn't happen my first announcement (ending end of 2011) was still valid.

Yes, Evergreen 11.1 and 11.2 had/have experimental status somehow. 11.4 is the first really planned Evergreen release and we try to improve our communication. People are invited to help out.
