Why not, actually? It works... It doesn't, as you have seen. It does, actually, after I have now replaced ncurses with tinfo, thanks to your hint. As this is not the "mainstream" way, still, the question remains, why are the respective static libs not there? Or how can this be configured?

Forget about static libraries. You want -llibrary, and nothing else. Make sure you have all required devel packages in the build dependencies.
