[opensuse-buildservice] Adding repository: 10.2 or 10.2:Update?
Hello, I'm trying to build some backports of openSUSE:Factory packages, targeting stock openSUSE 10.2 + updates, and am not sure whether I need to add the openSUSE:10.2 repository, openSUSE:10.2:Update, both, or just the openSUSE 10.2 option that I can select without going to the advanced page on the web interface. Does openSUSE:10.2:Update include openSUSE:10.2 ? Thanks, -- Michel --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

Usually you should build against openSUSE:10.2 . All later updates remain compatibel, so a package does still work, if the user has updated his system. The only exception, where this compatibility gets broken is the linux kernel API. So, if you build kernel modules (kmp packages) than you build against openSUSE:10.2:Update Youd do not specify both, because openSUSE:10.2:Update "builds" against openSUSE:10.2, this means you get a package from the later one, if it does not exist in :Update -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) email: adrian@suse.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

Yes. It is recommended especially if you build kernel modules. Ciao, Marcus --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

It is only recommended, if you build kernel modules. Otherwise openSUSE:10.2 is recommended. see my other mail ;) -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) email: adrian@suse.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

Your message arrived when I was typing my reply -- thanks for the clarification! So I guess the main criterion for openSUSE updates is that they maintain API and ABI stability. Ah, thanks. So the standard "openSUSE 10.2" that people get if they do not select the Advanced option is just openSUSE:10.2:Update/standard ? no, it is openSUSE:10.2/standard, otherwise packages might not work on stock 10.2 . -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) email: adrian@suse.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-buildservice+help@opensuse.org

Just curious: What about building PHP modules? Is PHP maintained with a stable API/ABI or should I build against the :Update repo? It should be API and ABI compatible ( note **should** although it **may** not be..heh :P ), but if you build PHP extensions, please drop me a note in order to add them to server:php:extensions and avoid duplicated work, if for some reason updates break ABI I will either fix PHP to avoid that or build the extensions against :Update repo. If you find something wrong, let me to know ;P -- WARNING: This bug is visible only to employees, You are allowed to be mad at them.

Feel free to include php5-magickwand from home:cboltz there ;-) Package status: - works on 10.2 (including latest updates) without problems - at least my customer didn't complain about any problems... - not tested on 10.3 - which is slightly different because of a patch only applied in <= 10.2 because of a too old ImageMagick Disclaimer: I can't promise to maintain the package actively because - I only need the package as "worksforme" ;-) - I already had to patch out a feature to make it 10.2-compatible. Therefore I don't want more features or a newer version...
if for some reason updates break ABI I will either fix PHP to avoid that or build the extensions against :Update repo.
Please also drop a note to this ML if this ever happens... Regards, Christian Boltz --
