Why ?
Translator does not need the whole source tree or the whole translations tree. One file (and eventually pot file) is sufficient. Git does not support single file download. Svn does. In case of translation-update-upstream, I had to work around that problem, and wrote a simple translation download over cgit or GNOME Translation Project server.
