[Bug 495020] New: installer detects fiber channel disk ahead of SCSI disk, causing wrong GRUB and fstab entries
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=495020 Summary: installer detects fiber channel disk ahead of SCSI disk, causing wrong GRUB and fstab entries Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ken@turnkey.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032600 SUSE/3.0.8-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.8 Installed 11.1 on a Dell Poweredge 2850 server today. This server has an onboard Megaraid SCSI controller as well as QLogic QLE2460 fiber channel card going to an Xserve RAID. During the hardware detection phase, the fiber channel disk was placed in sda, ahead of the onboard SCSI MegaRAID controller at sdb. So the installer installed 11.1 on sdb. No problem with the install, but when it came to rebooting, it could not find sdb because the SCSI controller was now at sda, presumably because its module loaded first. I had to rescue the situation by using the rescue system to edit sdb to sda in menu.lst and fstab. The next server I installed, I wised up and disconnected the fiber channel disk before the install. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. See description above Actual Results: GRUB tried to boot off /dev/sdb, and the kernel will try to mount sdb partitons if it gets past GRUB by manual intervention, but the OS is actually on sda. Expected Results: Either the installer should smarter and use the same order of detection as in the final initrd, or it should use disk/by-id or disk/by-label names in menu.lst and fstab. Alternatively users should be warned to disconnect SCSI disks not in use before installing. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
