[Bug 444740] New: The KDE3 knetworkmanager cannot connect to wireless networks
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444740 Summary: The KDE3 knetworkmanager cannot connect to wireless networks Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: nice@titanic.nyme.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Sadly I have to use the old knetworkmanager, because the new one does not support WPA-enterprise, which I use every day. However, I observed that, beginning wih openSUSE 11.0, the KDE3 knetworkmanager is not willing to connect to wireless networks after the installation. I have to add and remove connection profiles, restart, reboot etc. to make it finally working. I've just installed openSUSE 11.1-Beta5, so it doesn't work now. It sees the AP-s, but when I click on a wireless network, simly nothing happens. Additionally, when I save a WPA-ENTERPRISE PEAP-MSCHAPv2 profile and then reopen it, I cannot set the phase2 authentication to MSCHAPv2. In fact I cannot set it to anything. Knetworkmanager seems to have forgotten about MSCHAPv2 (and about MD5 too), it simply does not offer any phase2 metods, only after changing the phase1 method to something different from PEAP, and then back to PEAP. However, after saving this profile, and then reopening, phase2 methods get lost again. I will attach two knetworkmanagerrc files. One with a WPA-Enterprise profile (with an altered password, of course), and one with an open network. knetwork manager sipmply ignores my command to connect using any of them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I wonder what wpa_supplicant is doing wrong on the group handshake. I have no sniffer, either, to see what's really going on.
wpa_supplicant should not be at fault here (I have no problems with group key handshakes on iwl3945, iwl4965 and ath5k). Instead you've mentioned to use ndiswrapper which is unstable by design :) Thus I suggest to open a new report for this issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That should be fixed in Factory already since last Friday. Both, a new KNM and NM are required. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I was unable to connect to the wpa-enterprise network even with the bare wpa_supplicant, just like before.
Sorry I haven't seen your bugreport before, your comment #5 indicates networkmanager is still running, he will disconnect any wpa_supplicant attempts, which wpa_supplicant doesn't see as a problem, so he just starts connecting again =) So before using wpa_supplicant you need to run 'rcnetwork stop' to stop the networkmanager (which in 11.1 has complete networking control) I am sorry this doesn't solve the real problem =/ If you dare, you could try using KDE4:STABLE from the build service repository, it brings a 4.1.3 with updated networkmanager-kde4 packages which work good for me, even in wpa-eap networks, but it is still a bit rough around the edges though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Many thanks for the reply. In fact I stop the networking service (and kill the remaining wpa_supplicant processes) before starting another wpa_supplicant manually.

Is it the SLE 11 stuff? I may give it a try in the near future. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you open a bugreport against wpa_supplicant? Could you please do so? Regarding the KNM issue: there was a security update for KNM and NM recently. OK, I will do so in the next days. BTW, my suspicion is that the whole wireless system is disturbed my the multiple APs broadcasting the same SSIDs on different frequencies. Surprisingly I was successful to join WPA-PSK and WPA-enterprise networks by Gnome's nm-applet, but i had to make many tries to be successful once.
Regarding the KNM issue: there was a security update for KNM and NM recently. Do you have any messages in /var/log/messages that show rejected DBus method calls when trying to establish a connection?

If you dare, you could try using KDE4:STABLE from the build service repository, it brings a 4.1.3 with updated networkmanager-kde4 packages which work good for me, even in wpa-eap networks, but it is still a bit rough around the edges though.
I was unable to use those packages, because I have KDE 4.2.1. However, my kde4 networkmanager applet is alway able to do something reasonable, but it's basically still unusable. Is it possible that my problem is basically caused by the 64 bit archiecture? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
