[Bug 1081481] New: Regressions in NVIDIA driver update to release 390.25
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1081481 Bug ID: 1081481 Summary: Regressions in NVIDIA driver update to release 390.25 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: dgolden@golden-consulting.com QA Contact: sndirsch@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 760510 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=760510&action=edit nvidia bug report file Started out with the following from bug report 1080742: STR: 1. I ran 'zypper up' today which upgraded the NVIDIA driver to version 390.25-4.1 2. Reboot 3. Login to Plasma EXPECTED: Everything should work without problems ACTUAL: Before login to Plasma everything looks fine. But upon login the desktop gets messed up and multiple message dialogs appear: --- KWin Window Manager Desktop effects were restarted due to a graphics reset --- Additionally there is quite intensive hdd activity and top shows kwin_x11 as very active process. It is not possible to click on anything or interact with the UI. ----------------------------- Partial workaround: Press 5 or more times Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Alt+F7. This makes the messages to stop but still other things are messed up (icon text, oyranost cannot start color management etc) ----------------------------- Complete workaround (fixes the problem): snapper undo for the before/after zypper run ----------------------------- I waited for the Bug 1080742 fix to become available and tried to use zypper up on just one of my systems with the following build (pluse associated nivdia packages: nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default-390.25_k4.4.76_1-10.1.x86_64.rpm ----------------------------- I reopened Bug 1080742 with the following comment: I installed nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default-390.25_k4.4.76_1-10.1.x86_64.rpm and associated packages today. After installing I noticed several warnings that I have not seen in previous updates. After rebooting kdm was started and I logged in but plasma wouldn't start. I created nvida bug and attached it along with segment of /var/log/zypp/history with the warnings and unresolved. After I terminated the user session using alt-bkspc twice I was able to login again and get to the plasma workspace; however, I'm not going in install on any other system until I find out why the warnings that I've never seen before are there. If the warnings are benign then please let me know. ----------------------------- Stefan Dirsch responded and asked me to open an new bug report. I still think that this is part of the problem with that bug, because the warnings were in both builds. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I couldn't find anything obvious in NVIDIA's logfile. Seems the weak-updates symlinks cannot be created for kernel 4.4.104, but since you're booting 4.4.114 this can't explain the issue and kernel modules are loaded with your system. Maybe your desktop can be started with xdm and it's a ssdm-only issue.
I don't use sddm. I doesn't matter if I boot to 4.4.114 or 4.4.104. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hmm. I would have expected, that you don't have any nvidia kernel modules loaded with 4.4.104.
Anyway, better verify, if it is related to a packaging issue at all, i.e. please uninstall all nvidia packages ( "sudo rpm -e $(rpm -qa|grep nvidia)" ) and reinstall the driver manually via NVIDIA's shell script archive you can download on http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
I had to black list nouveau and mkinitrd before NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.25.run would run. It definitely only updates the running kernel and doesn't run mkinitrd so it doesn't install the driver until starting X. I attached the log. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From what I can determine, there is/are missing symbolic links from the /lib/modules/4.4.76-1-default/updates which appears to be where the nvidia modules are built, to the backup kernel.
I will provide the /var/log/zypp/history segments from the 384.111 and 390.25 updates. Dennis -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
