[Bug 561739] New: Installation from openSUSE 11.2 Live CD saved on local machine not possible
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561739 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561739#c0 Summary: Installation from openSUSE 11.2 Live CD saved on local machine not possible Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: karl.payer@drei.at QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091103 SUSE/3.5.5-3.1 Firefox/3.5.5 According to different documentation sources of openSUSE it should be possible to install an OS from an ISO-image copied to a local hard disk without creating a CD. In the "openSUSE 11.2 www.novell.com November 09, 2009 Reference", page xiii, it is metioned: "Installation Quick Start (↑Installation Quick Start) Lists the system requirements and guides you step-by-step through the installation of openSUSE from DVD, OR FROM AN ISO IMAGE." (Wich is not the case.) On http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_without_CD, in section "Installing from data saved on your local machine" getting kernel and initrd from openSUSE-11.1-DVD-i586.iso is mentioned as an example. On the other hand in file:///usr/share/doc/packages/linuxrc/linuxrc.html, the description of the parameter 'install' mentions the example: # local disk, ISO image openSUSE-10.3-i386-DVD.iso install=disk://install/openSUSE-10.3-i386-DVD.iso So I tried to do this with the image of openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso and added the following lines to my menu.lst (having copied /boot/i386/loader/linux, /initrd out of the ISO-image to /boot/inst-linux, /inst-initrd before): title Install SUSE root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/inst-linux \ install=hd://dev/sda4/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso vga=0x317 initrd /boot/inst-initrd Another test I performed with: title Install SUSE kernel (hd0,3)/boot/i386/loader/linux \ install=hd://dev/sda4/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso vga=0x317 initrd (hd0,3)/boot/i386/loader/initrd Each one of the tests led to the following messages: … KIWI … … 'Mounting Live boot drive ........' 'Couldn't find live image configuration file' In 'console Alt+F3' lines like the following could be found: .. + driverready /dev/sr0 .. .. CDMountOption /dev/sr0 or '/dev/sr1' but nothing that would indicate that the ISO-image on my /dev/sda4 would be searched for. As an alternative I performed tests with the 'linux' and 'initrd' files of openSUSE 10.3 and openSUSE 11.1 too, since I hoped using one of these could lead to a search for my openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso saved in my /dev/sda4/iso. But this was not possible, each time a 'no repository' message was the only result. Looking to the files contained in the openSUSE-10.3-i386-DVD.iso I noticed that such files like syslinux.cfg or isolinux.cfg can be found there. So it seems to me that linuxrc is not used by the openSUSE-11.2 CDs and the 'linuxrc'-style of passing parameters like I used it can't work any longer. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. copying /boot/i386/loader/linux, /initrd out of the ISO-image to /boot/inst-linux, /inst-initrd 2. adding lines to menu.lst: title Install SUSE root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/inst-linux \ install=hd://dev/sda4/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso vga=0x317 initrd /boot/inst-initrd 3. reboot Actual Results: messages during install: 'Mounting Live boot drive ........' 'Couldn't find live image configuration file' 'reboot after 120sec' Expected Results: continue installation from the image openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso Further information to my PC: Hewlett-Packard HP d330 uT(DF385T) Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz /dev/sda1/ swap /dev/sda2/ ext4 / /dev/sda3/ ext4 /home /dev/sda4/ ext3 BS: Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1-default i686 System: openSUSE 11.2 (i586) KDE: 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) "release 6" -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
