[Bug 422033] New: openSUSE 11.0 hangs on installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=422033 Summary: openSUSE 11.0 hangs on installation Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Booting AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: whippanykid@mac.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Probably the best way for me to describe the problem would be to reproduce for you the correspondence I have had with Novell customer service concerning it. * * * (08/11/2008) Brief Description: installation freezes Detailed Description: I have been trying to install openSUSE 11.0 on a Sony VAIO computer, model # PCV-W20. When I do so, I am only able to get through the first two screens, i.e., the "Welcome" screen and the Boot Options. When I choose "Installation" from the Boot Options screen and press ENTER, I get a screen that says "Loading Linux Kernel," then a screen with the name "openSUSE," under which there is a white line. The white line begins expanding slowly from the left; when it reaches the left edge of the "e" in "open," it stops moving, the computer shows complete inactivity (i.e., all lights stop blinking), and, after waiting several minutes with no activity on the part of the computer, I conclude that the installation process has frozen. I have tried other options, viz., the "Installation -- Safe Settings" option and the "Installation -- Local APIC Disabled" option. With both of these, I get the same result as when I simply choose "Installation": the white line gets to the left edge of the "e" of "open," then stops moving. I reboot by pressing CTL-ALT-DEL. The computer on which I am trying to install openSUSE has a Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1.80 GHz and 480 MB of RAM. The memory requirements for openSUSE 11.0 are listed as 256 MB minimum, 512 MB recommended. My guess is that the problem is being caused by insufficient RAM. Please let me know if you think there is something else that could be the cause of this, and that I can do to get this to install. Note: There are two further problems that I am experiencing, namely, the installer recognizes neither my computer's mouse nor its screen resolution. But the main problem is that it doesn't get past the initial stages of installation * * * (08/18/08) Dear Peter, With regards to Service Request # 10418317271: Please try to do a text-mode install by inserting the media and pressing F3 twice this should open a screen were you can choose to do a text-mode install. This uses less system resources when installing the system so you may have some chance, also there are some commands given from the Boot Option Screen before you proceed with the installation these are insmod=ide-generic, maxcpus=0, mem=512 press enter then proceed with the install. If you say you have tried the other options of failsafe and acpi then there are not to many more suggestions I can give to you. SUMMARY OF SR # 10418317271 * SR Product: openSUSE * Novell Support Engineer: JGLEESON * SR Brief Description: installation freezes * * * (09/01/08) Hi Peter, With regards to Service Request # 10418317271: Could you please let me know if the previous information helped you install OpenSuSe 11? Also, it could be that this is quite a bug with your system specifically. Please feel free to visit bugzilla.novell.com and open an account. You can report the Problem and a Developer most likely will get back to you and help you out or fix the problem if this ends up as a bug. Thank you, Alejandro Bonilla * * * (09/02/08) Hello, I'm sorry for the delay in replying. I did attempt the install by the method suggested, that is, by text mode. This method did not work, either. I tried two different text-mode installations, first without specifying any options, second, after specifying the options suggested by John Gleeson (insmod=ide-generic, maxpus=0, mem=512). Both times, the machine hung, although it hung at different points: when I did the installation without the options, the process hung up at the point that it read "Activating usb devices"; when I did the installation with the specified options, the process hung up sooner, immediately after the line "Booting the kernel" appeared; a line also appeared that read as follows: "BUG: Int 6: CR2 00000000". Note: I attempted this installation after installing extra RAM on the computer. So lack of memory is not the problem, which was one possibility I had suggested. Hoping this information is of some help to you. If you have any further suggestions as to how I might get openSUSE 11 installed, please let me know. I will report this to Bugzilla, as you recommend.
