https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215194 Summary: DNS Server - SOA entries in respect to Serial Number cannot be changed Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de If a DNS server is employed in YAST and a Zone established and attempt to edit the Serial Number of the SOA records fails and reverts to "an unknown default. In this excercise a DNS zone was created for DNS forwarding to the ISP and the values for the entries were taken from a DNS report on the ISP and the values were cut and pasted from this report. Only the serial number is unable to be modified. I do not know where it establishes it serial number from when the correct NS records are input from this report. A DNS report can be found at http://www.dnsreport.com/ and the ISP in question results can be found at http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=www.tpg.com.au The other site options mentioned here are for referenceonly and are as follows http://www.dnsstuff.com/ and expert tools found at http://www.dnsstuff.com/pages/expert.htm the other important reference site can be found at http://www.ipv6tools.com/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215194 ------- Comment #13 from locilka@novell.com 2006-11-01 00:32 MST ------- OK, I see. If you change the "Serial" in SOA, it's actually written as you have entered it (checked) but then, when you open the DNS Server Configuration again, there is some "strange default" value like 2006XXYYZZ. Serial: A 32-bit number which should incrase every zone-update http://www.zytrax.com/books/dns/ch8/soa.html says: The convention is to use a date based value to simplify this task - the most popular being yyyymmddss where yyyy = year, mm = month and dd = day ss = a sequence number in case you update it more than once in the day! Using this date format means that the value 2005021002 means the last update was on the 10th Febrary 2005 and it was the third update that day. The date format is just a convention not a requirement so BIND will provide no validation of the field. It is easy to make mistakes and get serial numbers out of sequence. Anyway, a user-changed Serial could stay preserved (if possible and increased with zone update), but that might be impossible when YaST tries to use the date format. Let's see. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215194 ------- Comment #15 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-01-09 20:22 MST ------- I have a feeling that the DNS server is functioning correctly. By right is should have its own unique serial number asa such generated. If it was possible to enter a serial number that was equal to the ISP serial number this would be incorrect. It all it is its own DNS server and as such it should posses its own serial number as it currently does. Please re-evaluate this bug as I think the local DNS server should generate its own serial number and is functioning correctly. My aim at duplicating the serial number of the DNS server of my ISP is unfounded I believe. As such each DNNS server should have its own serial number under the rules in #13 Above - Your thoughts -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
