[Bug 786507] New: Desktop selection: strange alert message
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=786507 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=786507#c0 Summary: Desktop selection: strange alert message Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rneuhauser@suse.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- select the Other radio button, don't select any of the more specific ones (XFCE, LXDE ...). [Next] is still enabled. when i press it, an alert appears: "No system type was selected. Select the default type." it asks me to select the default type. really? why should i not select a non-default one? "Please select a desktop environment." would be a better prompt, graying out [Next] until it's actually possible to move on would be better still. also, please consider promoting the "text mode" to the top-level (make it sibling to the Gnome, KDE, Other options (IMO it does not belong under "Other" as it's not really a desktop environment). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Plus you can install other ones. What about "Select the default desktop type"? About that text mode, I'm not sure. I think it was the intention to hide all less used options into Other, so the dialog is cleaner. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"default" is something that will be used unless i select something explicitly. i suggest "Select the desired desktop environment." as the whole message. "No system type was selected" should go as well: the screen title says "Desktop selection", not "System type selection"! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"No system type was selected" should go as well: the screen title says "Desktop selection", not "System type selection"!
not just the screen title. there's *five* instances of "desktop environment" and not a single "system type" in the blurb:
Desktop Selection
The desktop environment on your computer provides the graphical user interface for your computer, as well as a suite of applications for email, Web browsing, office productivity, games, and utilities to manage your computer.
openSUSE offers a choice of desktop environments. The most widely used desktop environments are GNOME and KDE, and they are equally supported under openSUSE. Both desktop environments are easy to use, highly integrated, and have an attractive look and feel. Each desktop environment has a distinct style, so personal taste determines which is the most appropriate desktop for you.
"system type" is simply wrong here. but, this is beside the point. no matter how well-written the message is, it's still wrong that i can provoke it at all: the software should simply disable the [Next] button until / unless a configuration is selected. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
