Drawing is slow when switching virtual terminals, scrolling in less is slow, etc... No other application seems to be behaving this way, xterm is blindingly fast in comparison. This became apparent after upgrading from 11.0 to 11.1, but it may also be related to the fact that the X driver is now radeonhd, while previously it was fglrx. (I also realized that I was using the "konsole" from kde3, the one from kde4 has comparatively good speed, although scrolling in "less" is still crappy on both fbdev and radeonhd compared to xterm.) (Side note: there's still some X buglets here: why didn't these messages make it into Xorg.0.log? Why weren't the console and keyboard restored when X exited? I'll open a separate bug if that's OK.) After deinstalling fglrx DRI starts fine, but konsole3 remains slow. With additional "AccelMethod" "EXA" konsole3 still remains slow as a snail. With DRI removed and "AccelMethod" set to "shadowfb" konsole3 is lightning fast. And it seems to be some kde config thing that is really slowing down drawing. When trying to find what was going wrong we tried every possible driver setting (once we got rid of fglrx completely that was installed for testing), but nothing changed. Then we followed HuHa's suggestion to run IceWM and suddenly konsole was functioning nicely. So... looks like a KDE issue... With good old xterm speed is absolutely acceptable. Other things being slow can be attributed to the overall slowness of the machine.
