[Bug 598125] New: include template for monitor section
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=598125 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=598125#c0 Summary: include template for monitor section Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lnussel@novell.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- The automatic monitor detection of xorg sometimes does not or even can not work. The default emulated monitor of kvm for example doesn't support DDC. The fall back is 800x600 then and xrandr refuses to set a bigger resolution. It requires quite some searching, copy&pasting and swearing to hand craft an xorg.conf then. To simplify that task for people who can operate vi but don't know xorg.conf inside out I'd like to suggest including template xorg.conf snippets with instructions in the default install. Files like the following do not seem to hurt auto detection AFAICT but are still easy to find and adjust: ==> /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-screen.conf <== Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Default Monitor" EndSection ==> /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf <== Section "Monitor" Identifier "Default Monitor" ## if your monitor doesn't support DDC you may override the defaults here # HorizSync 28-85 # VertRefresh 50-100 ## add your mode lines here, use e.g the cvt tool EndSection -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the absence of specific association of monitor sections to outputs, if a monitor section is present the server will associate it with an output to preserve compatibility for previous single-head configurations.

That doesn't sound like a clever system. Isn't there any other way to change the internal 800x600 default?
Not really.
kvm emulates a graphics card that uses the 'cirrus' driver here.
Well, for that old-fashioned drivers your Monitor section approach still works. In general it should still work for non RANDR >= 1.2 drivers. RANDR >= 1.2 driver currently are: intel, radeon, radeonhd, nouveau, nv(>=G80), fglrx Non-RANDR 1.2 drivers: nvidia, fbdev, vesa, cirrus, vmware?, vboxvideo?, mga, ... So if we add such snippets we should add the information, for which drivers this doesn't work. So probably for most users these snippets are useless anyway ... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

According to xorg.conf manpage the generic method is still supposed to work:
In the absence of specific association of monitor sections to outputs, if a monitor section is present the server will associate it with an output to preserve compatibility for previous single-head configurations.
Still the drivers ignore it anyway. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

sounds like the drivers are buggy
More likely this abstract is no longer up-to-date. In the absence of specific association of monitor sections to outputs, if a monitor section is present the server will associate it with an output to preserve compatibility for previous single-head configurations. Anyway, I don't want to discuss that ... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
