http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1081653 Bug ID: 1081653 Summary: TW20180218 installation failed to create initrd Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: mrmazda@earthlink.net QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 760717 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=760717&action=edit y2logs from host big31 I did see an error message at proceeding to install selected packages reporting none of the target (sda27,sda9,sda11) devices found, no other error messages. HTTP installation to expert use existing partitioning, EXT4 / target, custom Role, and detailed package selection without recommends, including no bootloader installation, with grub rpm, without grub2* rpms. After trying first in chroot to build an initrd with dracut, and getting "dracut: Cannot find module directory /lib/modules/4.4.114-42-default/", 'mkinitrd -B' made one that boots. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW: Why is your system so terrible slow ? Are you using a VM ?
Real G31/ICH7 hardware that was working fine until trying a fresh TW installation. The two previous TW installations work normally, as do 42.2 and 42.3. The only VMs I use are for DOS under OS/2 for which Linux distros provide no equivalence. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The root filesystem is not formatted by YaST but simply reused. I would not recommended that. Old files could cause trouble. Like the procedure is unsupported.
My installations are virtually always to multiboot. "Reuse" here means special preparation by booting anything else prior to starting installation and selectively deleting from the target, so that /usr/, /sys/, /var/, /lib/, /bin/ among other necessaries are absent, most of /etc/ is absent, and selective portions of /boot/ and /root/, and custom / directories are preserved. This considerably speeds up re-customization when replacing existing installations, and provides several .rpmsave and .rpmnew files for examination. It was a long frustrating day of attempting to install first 15, and then several times TW. Let's assume I made a boo-boo and forgot to effectively clean /boot/. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
