[Bug 434546] New: Sensors reports seperate core temp as much higher than overall CPU temp
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434546 Summary: Sensors reports seperate core temp as much higher than overall CPU temp Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 2 Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: quentin.jackson@exclamation.co.nz QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer As above, but as an example on my quad core I have cores 1-4 at 54, 37, 37, 40 degrees C and the overall CPU reads 14 degrees C. Obviously this can't be right, can it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

These look correct in your case. What isn't correct is the temperatures reported by the external sensor chips. In particular, all 3 temperatures reported by the Winbond W83791D are clearly wrong. I am not sure about the third temperature reported by the Winbond W83627DHG (your Super-I/O chip), but it is probably incorrect as well. I'd rather trust the first 2 temperatures of that chip: Sys Temp: +35.0°C (high = +88.0°C, hyst = +116.0°C) sensor = thermistor CPU Temp: +39.0°C (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C) sensor = diode Check what the BIOS says, but I'd expect similar values, at least these look sane. So it's really only a matter of ignoring the invalid temperature readings. This is normally done by editing /etc/sensors3.conf, but I seem to remember that gkrellm doesn't use libsensors? So presumably gkrellm itself offers a way to ignore invalid readings. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

gkrellm doesn't use libsensors?
Yes, that's true. Quentin, please just do commands in comment 7 and then compare output from sensors and gkrellm at the same time point. Output from gkrellm -d 0x80 would could help as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Quentin, as you see, many of lines from "sensors", especially with "ALARM" has probably or evidently wrong values. You should figure out which values for your hardware should be in factor, offset, min, max fields in appropriate configuration and which sensors should be switched off, as Jean wrote. These values then configure /etc/sensor3.conf for sensors or F1->Builtins->Sensors->{Temperatures,Fans,Voltages}. Jean, do you have any pointers where found these informations? In manuals? In sources of windrivers ;)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434546 User jdelvare@novell.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434546#c14 Jean Delvare <jdelvare@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |ASSIGNED Info Provider|jdelvare@novell.com | --- Comment #14 from Jean Delvare <jdelvare@novell.com> 2008-12-16 10:32:12 MST --- Writing a board-specific configuration file can be tedious. My usual advice is to write down everything the BIOS shows, and if possible, everything the vendor-provided Windows hardware monitoring tool provides. Then edit the libsensors configuration file until sensors' output matches what the BIOS says. You can look into the manual for extra hints but in general there aren't many. In this specific case it's even harder, especially for voltages, because there are two hardware monitoring chips instead of one. Without information from the vendor about what is wired to each input, it can be very difficult to figure it out. At least the fans may be not too difficult to get right. Apparently there are no fans connected to the W83627DHG (all fan inputs read 0 RPM even though the clock divider has the maximum value) so I guess they are connected to the W83791D. Try increasing all fan clock dividers to 8 and see if you get readings. For this, add the following to /etc/sensors3.conf: chip "w83791d-*" set fan1_div 8 set fan2_div 8 set fan3_div 8 set fan4_div 8 set fan5_div 8 then run "sensors -s". Once you have speed readings, you should be able to figure out the correct labels by comparing with what the BIOS displays. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
