[Bug 297754] New:=?UTF-8?Q?=20Can=C2=B4t=20connect=20to=20no?= n-broadcasting (hidden) wireless network
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=297754 Summary: Can´t connect to non-broadcasting (hidden) wireless network Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 7 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: deckel@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: IS&T I can´t connect to "onenet" which is an unencrypted but hidden (non-broadcasting SSID) wireless network. I am using NetworkManager. Hardware is Lenovo X60 with ipw3945. Software is: iwl3945-ucode-2.14.1.5-2 iwlwifi-kmp-default-0.1.8_2.6.22.1_14-2 both from STABLE. kernel-default-2.6.22.1-10 (from Alpha7) Connecting to non-hidden network works. Even with WPA-PSK. iwconfig wlan0 essid onenet ip l set wlan0 up ifup-dhcp wlan0 works as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

WIRELESS_ESSID='myssid'
in that file, the ssid is not set on ifup (or rcnetwork start/restart). I can check this by calling 'iwconfig wlan0' after ifup:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
wpa_supplicant is started but does not connect and is endlessly scanning. Here's the output from 'wpa_cli status':
Selected interface 'wlan0' wpa_state=SCANNING
It will keep scanning, unless I set the essid manually by calling
# iwconfig wlan0 essid myssid
That's all, after about 30 seconds the wlan0 device has got it's IP address an is connected. I'm not sure, but I think, I already had that problem with openSUSE 10.2 and the old ipw3945 module. I couldn't connect to hidden access points unless I set the ssid manually with 'iwconfig'. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Applied a patch i found in some bugzilla forums, which is setting the essid during connect, if essid is hidden. Took openSuSE10.3 RPM out of http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse/sr...
Good luck!

http://www-user.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~nhaag/RPMS/NetworkManager-0.6.5-29.i586.rpm I installed your package and it seems to solve the problem. THANKS SO MUCH!
But where is the patch you applied? I could neither find the patch nor the src.rpm. Could you please give me a link to the patch. I Just applied the patch into nm-wireless-driver-workarounds-rml.patch which is the first patch being applied by the rpm. the main part of the patch is: + else if (!strcmp (kernel_driver, "ipw3945") || !strcmp (kernel_driver, "iwl3945")) + { + if (nm_ap_get_broadcast (ap)) + { + ap_scan = "AP_SCAN 1"; + nm_info("SHIFIX >> Detected Driver %s - AP_SCAN=1 - essid = %s",kernel_driver,essid); + } + else + { + ap_scan = "AP_SCAN 1"; + nm_info("SHIFIX >> Detected Driver %s - AP_SCAN=1 - essid = %s",kernel_driver,essid); + } + } i'm happy for you, that this fix helps -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok it was not good as i first thought. With "options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1" /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi the system does NOT connect even with the NetworkManager RPMs from Norman. Without that line in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi it connects, but the connects rarely works for more than 5 seconds. It just dies, there is now iwevent or anthing, but I cannot ping anymore ... :-(
i have the same problem. with iwl3945 i can't connect to hidden ssid's and even if i got a connection established to another network, the connection gets lost soon. so i'm still using ipw3945 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

i'm happy for you, that this fix helps
maybe the if else structure seems a bit confusing (because it's senseless) but i want to get sure, that ssid is being set (wanted to test several ap_scan values...) you can remove the if-else if you want to. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
