https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242058 Summary: Second USB Mouse goes dead Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: novell@skewray.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I have two Kensington Optical Elite USB mice. The both worked fine under SuSE 10.1. After upgrading to 10.2, the second mouse works on boot, but will freeze up at random moments. It can only be revived by unplugging and replugging it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242058 ------- Comment #2 from novell@skewray.com 2007-02-05 08:21 MST ------- More details: First one mouse goes dead. Unplugging it from the USB and plugging it back in makes it work again. If I don't do that, then after a few minutes the second mouse will also die. When the second mouse goes, then the PS/2 keyboard stops working as well. Unplugging and replugging the mice makes the mice and the keyboard work again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I guess you receive this disconnect message at the time the mouse goes dead, not when you unplug it, right? Could you please check whether you have "USB legacy" settings in your BIOS, and if so, switch it off? Could you please provide output of the hwinfo command and full dmesg output? I checked the BIOS. USB Legacy was enabled, and I disabled it. What does this do?
This BIOS feature determines if the BIOS should provide legacy support for USB devices. This is a useful feature when using such USB devices with operating systems that do not natively support USB, which is not a case with Linux. On the other hand, this legacy support is broken on some bioses and confuse the OS drivers. Did disabling the feature in BIOS change the behavior of your problem in any sense? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I think you found the problem. I read that turning off legacy support makes a USB keyboard not work in grub. I don't have a usb keyboard now, but I may switch at some point. Unfortunately it is - the USB legacy setting allows BIOS to handle the USB devices before they are claimed by the operating system. Seems that your BIOS is broken. In an ideal (and usual) situation, it happens that as soon as Linux probes for the USB devices (early during the boot process), BIOS completely releases the control of them (when the Legacy support is turned on). Which probably doesn't happen fully on your hardware, and BIOS at some point confuses the ohci driver. Is there any chance that there is BIOS upgrade for your machine you could test? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
