[Bug 981168] New: Steam: 72-valve-steam-controler.rules is currently owned and shipped by udev
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=981168 Bug ID: 981168 Summary: Steam: 72-valve-steam-controler.rules is currently owned and shipped by udev Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: All OS: All Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: fbui@suse.com QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi, Currently udev ships this file: $ cat /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/72-valve-steam-controler.rules # for basic functionality of the controller in Steam and keyboard/mouse emulation SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1142", TAG+="uaccess" This doesn't look to belong to udev though. Could this be shipped by the steam package instead (if it's still needed) ? Thanks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

steam-controller should ship it. I assume shipping it in udev is redundant and might even cause conflicts.
Well, that's the goal of this bug actually: make the maintainers of steam package aware that this rule is wrongly part of udev currently. Either it should be added to the existing udev rules shipped by steam or maybe dropped but udev will get ride of it in a near future. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, it begs the question, why it is in udev in the first place. Do we add it in the udev package? Does it come from upstream? This would be easy to answer for the udev-/systemd-maintainers.
Well I'm part of the systemd maintainers team :) And no this rule is not part of upstream (otherwise I wouldn't have raised this issue here ;) ). As for why it was added in udev: I've no idea. There are plenty of workarounds/fixes/codes which had been added to systemd for no good reasons (IMHO) and we're currently in the process to clean this up. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, steam-controller provides the following udev rules in 99-steam-controller-perms.rules # Valve USB devices SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0666" # Steam Controller udev write access KERNEL=="uinput", SUBSYSTEM=="misc", TAG+="uaccess" # HTC Vive HID Sensor naming and permissioning KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2c87", MODE="0666" This is different from the rule in /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/72-valve-steam-controller.rules but as far as I understand, it basically does the same. So it looks like the rule in udev can indeed be dropped. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Noted, it will in a near future. If you think that nothing needs to be updated on the steam package side, then this bug can be closed. Thanks. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
