[Bug 230708] New: ICH6R RAID not activated during boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230708 Summary: ICH6R RAID not activated during boot Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 5 Platform: PC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Rudolf.Goeldner@email.de QAContact: qa@suse.de In OpenSuse 10.2 Intel's ICH6R is recognized as RAID and presented as /dev/mapper/isw_bbghbfafdj_RAID1_part1 etc. The RAID partitions are also in the FSTAB. During boot the system tries to activate he RAID partitions, but when they should be mounted they are reported to be not existent. See the extract from boot.msg below: "Waiting for /dev/mapper/isw_bbghbfafdj_RAID1_part1 /dev/mapper/isw_bbghbfafdj_RAID1_part5 .. Mounting local file systems... .. mount: special device /dev/mapper/isw_bbghbfafdj_RAID1_part1 does not exist" I found the following workaround which may be helpful to detect the bug: I created the following /etc/init.d/boot.raid: "/sbin/dmraid -ay sleep 5 # C mount /dev/mapper/isw_bbghbfafdj_RAID1_part1 etc." and defined a link to /etc/init.d/boot.d/s99boot.raid. The command "sleep 5" is important. Without it, boot.raid isn't performed correctly. ICH6R: Intel 925 chipset with Intel 82801FR I/O Controller Hub (Serial ATA-RAID-Controller) combined with Intel Application Accelerator RAID Option ROM for BIOS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This looks as if either initrd or system startup is not activating dmraid devices properly. It seems a suitable boot.dmraid is missing from the system. If this is the case dmraid is only working when used as root filesystem -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It really seems that there is the boot mechanism for dmraid devices missing, if it is not the root filesystem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Could you please check if this is working for you? You can download this one here: http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/makoenig/openSUSE_10.2/$ARCH/dmr... I thought it was obviuous that $ARCH should have been replaced with i586 or x86_64 (for your architecture), but even this wouldn't have worked for x86_64, beacause the rpm name would have been wrong: So it should be for i586: http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/makoenig/openSUSE_10.2/i586/dmra... for x86_64: http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/makoenig/openSUSE_10.2/x86_64/dm... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Do you need some more information as boot messages etc.? Another question: Installing 10.2 to my PC with this Intel RAID and one more S-ATA hard disk outside of the RAID, only the RAID partitions were recognized by GRUB and not the single S-ATA hard disk partitions. That is: it was not possible to install a bootloader for the Linux system, installed on the single S-ATA hard disk.
