[Bug 648258] New: kdm: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648258 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648258#c0 Summary: kdm: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: per@opensuse.org QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-GB; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.10 I have an IBM Thinkpad R51e with a fresh install of 11.3 plus KDE 4.5 stable - after I figured out to use "nodemodeset", the system at first seemed to run stable, but then it started ending my session at seemingly arbitrary times. In the log I found: Oct 15 22:53:50 t2 kdm[1301]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Oct 15 23:14:54 t2 kdm[1301]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Oct 16 08:49:09 t2 kdm[1294]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Oct 16 08:50:22 t2 kdm[1294]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Oct 16 09:35:22 t2 kdm[1294]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly I've looked through Xorg.0.log, but I don't see much that could hint at a reason for the above.

Well, s*** happens. I have the option of swapping the harddisk back to the 10.2 system it was running until I started the upgrade.
I'm afraid that's the best option for now, unless you would like to switch to fbdev or vesa driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Actually, one of those would probably be a better option - how do I configure one of those?
Never mind, I found it ( /etc/X/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just a quick update - I tried both vesa and fbdev, but none of them work.
Still Xserver is crashing? OMFG. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With both modules, I got to the login screen, but it then crashed after trying to login.
I think it's KDE4, which triggers that Sig11 (again Mesa swrast). BTW, I have the same issue currently and switched to fvwm2 for now. :-( No time for debugging right now ...
With the vesa module, even the console looked weird. fbdev still crashed, but the console was working. I tried blacklisting the 'radeon' module, I wasn't sure if it might be interfering, but although I added it to modprobe.d/50-blacklist, it still got loaded.
You also need to set NO_KMS_IN_INITRD to "yes" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and run mkinitrd afterwards. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks for the tip, have also switched to fbdev+fvwm2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the meantime I've had to revert to 11.2, but I'll reinstall 11.3 and see what happens.
Better only if you have an additional partition for the 11.3 installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
