[Bug 245675] New: YaST2 control-center icons missing
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245675 Summary: YaST2 control-center icons missing Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 0plus Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com After yesterdays uppdate the YaST control-center has lost its icons. It seems to work normal otherwise. In sysconfig there are two entries for YasT: YaST2 and yast2 the first seems to enable the type of GUI used, changing here between qt, gtk and ncurses does not seem to change anything. The changelog for YaST2 Main Package (2.15.8-2-i586) shows: Mon 12 Feb 2007 01:00:00 PM CET, - jsrain@suse.cz, - added control center switching, configurable via sysconfig (fate #301082) (mmeeks) The question remains, why there have to be two entries for YaST in sysconfig -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That thing is a standalone application that does the same thing as the graphical control centers (of which we have two by now: one Qt based (yast2-control-center), one GNOME based (yast2-control-center-gnome)). The application you see is the same thing that is started from the ncurses (text) user interface, only using the Qt UI. It does everything the other control centers do. It only does not have that much eye candy. How did you get to not have either of the two others installed? I don't know. You might have deselected them from the set of packages to install or whatever. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I actually had the control center installed, and, as outlined above, in the course of an update the change happened. If you care to look the stuff up in the file list of the packages, there is what you call "yast2-control-center", but the binary is now "/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2controlcenter", this is obviously not activated from the menu ( computer/more applications/System/YaST Administrator Settings ), nor is it activated by typing plainly "yast2" at the prompt. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Programmer <casualprogrammer@yahoo.com> 2007-08-13 04:07:08 MST --- Installation had been described in Comment #15 already. That's exactly the sequence: Clean install with GNOME install yast2-control-center-qt manually using yast2 sysconfig set wanted GUI and wanted shell to QT manually If you omit the last two steps, you end up with a very unpleasant and less than useful interface to yast2, especially for yast2 sw_single. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

DESKTOP_SESSION / WINDOWANAGER still works fine. As a workaround - use WANTED_SHELL=gtk and WANTED_GUI=qt, and you should get the best of both worlds :-) If you have constructive comments on yast2 sw_single under gtk - then please add them to bug #298735# for the UI team to include in their deliberations, or if there are any bugs please file them separately. Can you report if running /sbin/yast2 from the shell from which you extracted the 'set' information behaves identically ? if so, can you attach an: strace -f /sbin/yast2 -o /tmp/log from that same shell ? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245675#c25 Casual J. Programmer <casualprogrammer@yahoo.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |REOPENED Info Provider|casualprogrammer@yahoo.com | --- Comment #25 from Casual J. Programmer <casualprogrammer@yahoo.com> 2007-08-13 05:53:43 MST --- Now then, for the sake of preciseness: After another "clean" install I noticed where my oversight lies: obviously some icons are there, it was my fault not to change the Summary accordingly. In fact instead of the "old/familiar" QT shell and GUI, I get the GTK version. The yast2 control center comes up with black menu items on dark brown background, so you can not read what is offered unless you cross the area with the mouse pointer and notice that the items background changes to white so you can then read the titles. As for yast2 sw_single in GTK it bears its name appropriately, as you can only deal with single items as opposed to the QT version which allows you to operate on groups of items and/or checklists. I don't have any constructive remark on how to change that, because it would probably involve complete redesign. That is why I choose to stick with QT, and I would really suggest, that at least a choice is offered during installation as to which variant it should be. If I remember correctly, in 10.2 and earlier QT was the GUI of choice, hence I am used to it after trying the GTK variant, I do not feel inclined to prefer that over QT. If I again remember correctly, the setting of auto in wanted_shell and wanted_gui should produce the QT variant, as this does not happen I reopened this Bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=245675#c28 Michael Meeks <mmeeks@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|REOPENED |RESOLVED Resolution| |WORKSFORME --- Comment #28 from Michael Meeks <mmeeks@novell.com> 2007-08-13 09:37:56 MST --- CJP: it seems the main thrust of your problem recently has been that if you manually select 'qt' without having yast2-control-center-qt installed then it doesn't do what you want :-) it is unclear what best to do in this scenario => wontfix.
As for yast2 sw_single in GTK it bears its name appropriately, as you can only deal with single items as opposed to the QT version which allows you to operate on groups of items and/or checklists.
You tried to use 'multi-select' in the tree view ? :-) ctrl/shift are your friends; the 'install' & 'remove' buttons can be used cumulatively to build complex changes. But the fact that this confused you belongs in #298735# - please add constructive comments there :-). The name 'sw_single' is -totally- unrelated to the functionality, is the same for the Qt GUI, and is just a ycp script name.
I don't have any constructive remark on how to change that, because it would probably involve complete redesign.
You have no constructive criticism at all ? :-) that'd be amazing.
If I again remember correctly, the setting of auto in wanted_shell and wanted_gui should produce the QT variant, as this does not happen I reopened this Bug.
Au contraire - it should detect your desktop, and behave accordingly. Sorry you had such a bad experience - it'd really help to get some feedback on improving the package selector. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
