[Bug 414640] New: activating amavisd in mailserver prevention slows the machine
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=414640 Summary: activating amavisd in mailserver prevention slows the machine Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bidossessi.sodonon@yahoo.fr QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- i'm not too sure what to add to that. checking that option turns the machine to a crawl. running top lists like a dozen of amavisd processes, but no error is reported in /var/log/messages. I tried giving it time, but after two hours, i just gave up, since the machine was virtually unresponsive. if there's anything i should look for tho provide more feedback, i'll gladly do it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

this is an entry-level desktop P4 (3.0 Ghz) with a fresh install of opensuse 11.0. i'm configuring it as a server using yast, for testing purposes, but there are no clients currently, so load is generated by X apps. Memory: Total Used Free Shared Buffers Cached Mem: 448752 440732 8020 0 14016 149776 Swap: 674688 166788 507900 top - 13:47:54 up 6 min, 3 users, load average: 1.56, 1.84, 0.99 (In reply to comment #2 from Peter Varkoly)
please set the variable $maxserver to 2 in the line 17 of the file /etc/amavisd.conf.
$max_servers = 2; # num of pre-forked children (2..15 is common), -m $daemon_user = 'vscan'; # (no default; customary: vscan or amavis), -u $daemon_group = 'vscan'; # (no default; customary: vscan or amavis), -g restarting amavisd locks the machine, so this might actually be amavisd's fault. i'm running one more tryout, when the machine locks up, my only resort is a hard reboot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For the next version I'll make the count of the amavis processes variable. In ftp.suse.com/pub/people/varkoly/yast2-mail/11.0 you can find the for you adapted package with $max_servers = 2; -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
