The solution to the console problem is to add this feature to the nvidia driver. It's not too much work, but would still take a while, as the driver is hard to modify. We'll address this before attempting another change in the kernel's display configuration.

Does this solution mean that nvidia users will have to use an OpenSUSE built driver if they want a text console?

If only I could tell you. The correct thing for Nvidia to do would be to add the console support for to their driver. I have no idea why they don't do so already.
