Confused, I tried it on konsole and then tty, but still nothing happened. I tested my esc button and it worked closing full screens of youtube videos. So, The problem is either the shell or vim. vim indeed has a very high learning curve - but let me quote what someone said on the german openSUSE list some years ago (translated): vi commands are quite easy to remember. Once you know what dw db de d) d( d} d{ dd d^ d$ d0 dG cw and yw do, you'll also know what cb ce c) c( c} c{ cc c^ c$ c0 cG and yb ye y) y( y} y{ yy y^ y$ y0 yG do. [Bernd Bordesser] I hope you aren't too shocked now ;-)) The good thing about vim is that you can work very fast when you know the most important keys. You can even work faster if you modify your keyboard to have escape on the CapsLock key (that's what I did).
