https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216853 Summary: Getting ACPI errors on harddrive when booting up Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mboman@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de When I boot up the machine, I get several ACPI errors relating to the harddrives. This does not happen on SLED10 which is also installed on the same machine. Once the machine boots up, there are no issues mounting the drives. I've got one SATA and 2 PATA drives in the machine. ata1: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1F0 ctl 0x3F6 bmdma 0xFC00 irq 14 ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xFC08 irq 15 scsi0 : ata_piix Ouch, this still may have something to do with my "provide possibility to override SSDTs" patch, even this does not seem to match the (S)ATA errors in dmesg (all SATA stuff seems to be declared in there). I somehow feel this is something else in the deeps of the ACPI interpreter, but not sure yet. Is it possible for you to catch the whole kernel boot/dmesg output. Can you also catch and attach a SLE10 or 10.1 full dmesg output. Pls also provide an acpidump from SLE10 (if comment #5 came from acpidump). Does the command work without errors there? The boot params ide_noacpi, possibly only the boot param ide_noacpionboot should make the errors go away and the disk should work then? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The steps: cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.1-default cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.18.1-default make modules_install cd /boot (to be sure you may want to do a depmod -F /boot/System.map-2.6.18.1-default here, but this should already be done) mkinitrd -k vmlinuz-2.6.18.1-default -i initrd-2.6.18.1-default Please attach dmesg output of this one then. The problem seems to be that libata calls _GTF function before _STM has been called. This is forbidden by ACPI spec. A possible other bug could be that _STM has been invoked with wrong values, but I doubt that... all this should be included in the debug output... The ata_piix/libata issue occurs ~95% of the boot attempts with openSUSE 10.2. 5% of the time it goes through without a hitch. Looking at the dmesg output of the original post, and my setup, there are some differences (eg. the issue is only occuring on my secondary bus, not the primary bus), and some similarities (I alos have an ST3xxx812A drive as the master device, and a PIONEER DVD-RW as the slave device). I tried a manually compiled 2.6.18 and 2.6.19.1 kernels, and I get the same level of success / failure. When I tried a manually compiled 2.6.17.14 kernel, the problem is not observed. I suspect the issue has been introduced with the change to the ATA drivers that took place in 2.6.18 kernel. In any case, I have a solution that works for me - though it's not ideal. I found that either a) removing the PIONEER DVD-RW solved the problem, or b) swapping the order of the ST drive and PIONEER DVD-RW on the bus solved the problem. As this is the secondary bus, I went with option b) - so now my PIONEER DVD-RW is the master device on the bus, and the ST drive is the slave device. With this modified configuration, the boots are nice and fast once more. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I then tested 2.6.19.2 and the problem still happened there as well. I then tested 2.6.20-rc1, only to find that the problem doesn't happen there as well. So it looks like some of the early deliveries in 2.6.20 have addressed the issue, and so I have been unable to test your patch. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216853 ------- Comment #36 from markw@alliedtelesis.co.nz 2007-02-09 14:00 MST ------- Tejun, I've done the bisecting, and located the commit in the Linux GIT repo (git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git) that appears to resolve the issue. This is commit 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f, which was delivered by yourself as '[PATCH] libata: always use polling IDENTIFY' (Sun Dec 3 21:34:13 2006 +0900). I've verified this by resetting back to the commit prior to this one (3ac551a6a63dcbc707348772a27bd7090b081524) and verified that the issue is still there (ie the boots process is slow and there are a lot of ATA timeouts). Then when I reset to this commit (800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f) and build/test the issue is resolved (ie the boot is nice and fast, and there are no ATA timeouts). Now here's the problem.... in looking at the patches that are delivered as part of 2.6.18.2-34-default, it appears that the patch for 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f is already included. But it is this build that still has the slow boot time and ATA timeouts. I'm somewhat perplexed about this behaviour. Are there subsequent commits to 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f that may have broken, and then re-fixed the issue in a better way? Or was there a subsequent commit that re-fixed the 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f solution? I'll wait and take further direction from you if you think there is a more appropriate commit to test. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Sorry for the late reply. In any case, I have revisited 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f and by some means it looks like I managed to originally generate the diff for this commit the wrong way around - so what looked like you adding ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING, was, when I re-investigated the contents of the patch, you actually *reomving* ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING and the like. When I applied this patch to remove all the ATA POLLING support to the 2.6.18.2-34 kernel, and resolved the resulting conflict, it appears to resolve the issue. ie the boots are fast once more. So in short, commit 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f addresses my issue. Can you confirm that 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f removed code, and didn't really add code as I first suspected. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216853 ------- Comment #40 from teheo@novell.com 2007-02-25 07:45 MST ------- Hello, sorry about late response. I was on the road. I'm confused because the error message you reported for 2.6.19.2 is NOT a detection problem. It's HSM violation and timeouts for DMA READ command which is probably issued by partition code. Prior to 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f, polling identify is used if and only if ATA_FLAG_DETECT_POLLING flag is set. After the commit, it's the default behavior for all drivers. ata_piix had the flag set before the commit, so the commit does not introduce any behavior change for ata_piix. To summarize... 1. commit 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f only changes device detection and should NOT break or fix HSM violation during DMA READ. 2. commit 800b399669ad495ad4361d134df87401ae36f44f does NOT introduce behavior change for ata_piix. Please... 1. Post the dmesg of opensuse 10.2 without any patch. 2. Post the dmesg of opensuse 10.2 with the patch generated from 800b... 3. Post the patch itself.
