[Bug 235275] New: Sound problems with Alsa and Intel8x0 (82801) - wobbly audio
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 Summary: Sound problems with Alsa and Intel8x0 (82801) - wobbly audio Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: davidgiles@f2s.com QAContact: qa@suse.de OpenSUSE 10.2 installed on a Toshiba A50 laptop. Hardware reports as: Toshiba America Info 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller Playing sound via aplay, ie: aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav Will, randomly, result in 'wobbly' playback - slight pitch shifts, slowing down. This appears to be random; sometimes Ogg files can be played error-free for some time (Amarok), other times playing any audio straight after bootup will result in wobbly sound. I've tried an install several times - the problem persists. I've also patched Alsa to 1.0.13 - problem persists. Also tried playback with ac97_clock=48000 - problem persists. This hardware has worked fine with SUSE 9.x and OpenSUSE 10.[0|1]. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for this? Let me know if there are any logs/tracing I can produce to assist. Many thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #1 from davidgiles@f2s.com 2007-01-16 03:39 MST ------- Additional info: Does not appear to be linked to CPU usage. Can happen with just Amarok running (CPU usage 4%). Conversely, audio playback can work fine whilst cpu usage at 100%. Apologies for the reproducibility of the bug, however it does seem to be totally random. Many thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #2 from tiwai@novell.com 2007-01-16 03:55 MST ------- Hm, it's hard to debug, honestly. I've not heard much about such problems. IIRC, there were some problems with cpufreq. Is it your case, too? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #3 from davidgiles@f2s.com 2007-01-16 04:08 MST ------- Hi, That's understandable - it can run for some time before it starts to happen. I've checked some logs - /var/log/messages and dmesg - but there's no indication of anything untoward going on. Worst sort of problem, really. I'm not aware of any cpufreq problems - how were these manifesting themselves? Interesting - it could be a timing/clock issue somewhere (hence no errors being reported, as alsa thinks it's working fine). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #4 from tiwai@novell.com 2007-01-16 04:16 MST ------- You can adjust the powersave setting via yast to avoid lowerning cpu freq. If this helped -- well, then still difficult to fix properly ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #5 from davidgiles@f2s.com 2007-01-16 04:24 MST ------- Ah - right! Ok - I'm not in a position to test this right now. I'll update in six hours or so. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #7 from davidgiles@f2s.com 2007-01-16 11:01 MST ------- Hi, I've set the CPU frequency policy to performance (in KPowerSave) and confirmed that the CPU speed is pinned at 1500MHz. However, this doesn't appear to solve the problem. Monitoring other aspects of the system at the moment - I'll post back. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=235275 ------- Comment #9 from davidgiles@f2s.com 2007-01-16 12:48 MST ------- Hi, I've manually created a file and cat'd this into /dev/audio whilst monitoring it with the spectrum analyzer in KWaveView. The wobbly-sound issue doesn't seem to be impacting this. (this is working outside of Alsa?) I'm not sure I'd have too much success compiling Alsa up in debug mode - is it possible you could supply me with a tarball (or similar) with debug enabled? Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
