[Bug 414147] New: Configure pulseaudio correctly for skype
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=414147 Summary: Configure pulseaudio correctly for skype Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: clint@traveljury.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Skype doesn't play nicely with pulseaudio. Sound quality (in and out) is badly distorted. It renders Skype unusable. There is, however, a workaround, as described on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4526841#post4526841 I added these lines to my /etc/pulse/default.pa load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix sink_name=output load-module module-alsa-source device=dsnoop And these to my ~/.asoundrc pcm.skypeout { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } ctl.skypeout { type hw card 0 } pcm.skypein { type plug slave.pcm "dsnoop" } ctl.skypein { type hw card 0 } Restarted pulseaudio with: pulseaudio -k pulseaudio -D Skype now works perfectly, as does the rest of my sound (at least, in the applications I use) In /var/log/messages, I see these lines: pulseaudio[30865]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted pulseaudio[30865]: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dmix doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dmix doesn't support 8 channels, changed to 2. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dmix doesn't support sample format s16le, changed to s32le. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dsnoop doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dsnoop doesn't support 8 channels, changed to 2. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Device dsnoop doesn't support sample format s16le, changed to s32le. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Error opening PCM device hw:0: Device or resource busy pulseaudio[30865]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-sink" (argument: "device_id=0 sink_name=alsa_output.pci_8086_27d8_sound_card_0_alsa_playback_0"): initialization failed. pulseaudio[30865]: alsa-util.c: Error opening PCM device hw:0: Device or resource busy pulseaudio[30865]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-source" (argument: "device_id=0 source_name=alsa_input.pci_8086_27d8_sound_card_0_alsa_capture_0"): initialization failed. The "failure to load" seems to come from a second attempt to load module-alsa-source and module-alsa-sink via load-module module-hal-detect I know nothing about pulse, alsa or hal, so I'm not sure if the way that I have configured this is the best way for openSuSE - if there is a better way, I'm more than happy to find it out. But for now, this works for me -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can now (in 11.1) use pulse as sound device for Skype, and it works, so closing this
