https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=889139 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=889139#c0 Summary: KDE5 fails to start out of the box, workaround in the report Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cyberorg@opensuse.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0 kde5 does not work out of the box, it works fine after commenting out LD_BIND_NOW=true /usr/lib64/libexec/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper --kded +kcminit_startup in startkde with that line in startkde, it just sits at "kdeinit5: preparing to launch 'libkdeinit5_klauncher'" Manually launching that command also does the same. I could duplicate it on 2 machines. However using remote desktop the session launches fine even with that line in. phonon4qt5-backend-vlc is not installed. Using KDE:Qt5, KDE:Frameworks5 and zypper in plasma5-session also done zypper dup --from ... both of those repo Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/opensuse-edu/files/download/ISOs/openSUSE-Ed... 2. Add KDE:Qt5, KDE:Frameworks5 repo and install plasma5-session 3. zypper dup --from ... both of those repo 4. Try launching plasma5 session on a normal PC, not remote 5. Edit /usr/bin/startkde, comment out the line mentioned in details, plasma5 now launches. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've tried downloading the above ISO, and could indeed reproduce the issue. After a bit of investigation, it turns out the problem happens only with GDM; can you confirm that the session/kdeinit5 correctly start with e.g. KDM or lightdm? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With lightdm it works, however I have to add the following line before LD_BIND... as below: test -n "$ksplash_pid" && kill "$ksplash_pid" 2>/dev/null LD_BIND_NOW=true /usr/lib64/libexec/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper Without killing ksplash there it takes a very long time for desktop to appear. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Same happens with kde4 session. (see also https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755761) @Dominique, do you have any insights in GDM changes for 13.2 regarding $DISPLAY and XDG_* handling? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

GDM now supports XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP When it comes to DISPLAY, https://git.gnome.org/browse/gdm/commit/?h=gnome-3-12&id=ce40d34d71beb5e946b5f424cd53a181ff831c59 might be of interest session: don't set DISPLAY for sessions that bring their own We only want to set DISPLAY if the user session is sharing the display with the login screen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
