[Bug 269195] New: /boot/grub/menu.lst corrupted when updating from alpha3 DVD
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269195 Summary: /boot/grub/menu.lst corrupted when updating from alpha3 DVD Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com As being asked to update xorg-x11-server from the DVD in Bug 269120, I did so. The result being, that the openSuSE partition as well as the Windows partitions are inaccessible. The DVD is connected via Firewire and presumably YaST got confused about the disk ID, it enetered hd(1,x) instead of hd(0,x) into the boot menu. I managed to boot with my old grub boot diskette and correct /boot/grub/menu.lst manually. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269195 ------- Comment #4 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-04-27 10:34 MST ------- There's more to it than just fixing menu.lst, grub stages 1 & 2 need to be fixed too, alas neither /sbin/yast2 bootloader nor grub-install will fix it. They both claim an invalid device is referenced. WORKSTATION1L:/home/cjp # grub-install GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269195 ------- Comment #5 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-04-28 01:16 MST ------- After some digging I found /boot/grub/device.map to contain: (hd1) /dev/sda Changing this to (hd0) /dev/sda and also changing all occurrences of (hd1,x) to (hd0,x) in files /etc/grub.conf /boot/grub/menu.lst grub-install would run through and booting from hard disk finally works again. The question remains, why an update from DVD should cause all this havoc. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
