[Bug 616400] New: `sgi-fonts' not available for X applications
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=616400 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=616400#c0 Summary: `sgi-fonts' not available for X applications Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pablo@blueoakdb.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 SUSE/3.6.3-1.2 Firefox/3.6.3 I installed `sgi-fonts' using YaST. I noticed my `.Xdefault' entry for the `Emacs.Font' caused `emacs' to bark: Font `-sgi-screen...' is not defined. Upon further investigation, I see that `xfontsel' doesn't show the `sgi' foundry (it does on `openSUSE 11.1') I ran `fc-list | fgrep -i sgi' on `openSUSE 11.3 RC1' and I see the same results as when I issue the same command on `openSUSE 11.1': SGI Type:style=Regular SGI Haebfix:style=Regular SGI Screen:style=Regular SGI Screen:style=Bold SGI Haeberli:style=Regular SGI Rock:style=Regular SGI International:style=Regular SGI Iris:style=Regular SGI Screen Wide:style=Bold At this point, I'm not sure what additional data to provide to help resolve the issue. I'm marking this bug as `major' because I see that any font added (I added some Microsoft fonts `MicrosoftFonts-1-jen14.noarch.rpm') are not available to X applications. Please re-classify as you see fit. I don't have a global view of the world. :) Thank you! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use `YaST' to install `sgi-fonts' 2. Use `xfontsel' to note `sgi' foundry is not listed. :( Actual Results: Any X application which wishes to use the `SGI' foundry fails. Poor thing. Expected Results: After installing `sgi-fonts', we will have wickedly beautiful bitmap fonts where ones and els are unambiguously distinguishable. Until then, we live in the dark ages. ;) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We don't use fontserver by default. Thus this does not help.

To date, I haven't found anything to match `tahoma' with its clarity at small font size: eight, nine, etc. Along similar lines, I specifically use `sgi-fonts' because a backtick and an apostrophe are clear, as is an el and a one and zero has a nice slash to differentiate it between a capital Oh. The reality is my eyes are not getting younger and I need all the (font) help I can get. :) Cheers, -pablo -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
