This was zypper being run out of cron, apparently, for an automatic update. This is a very serious issue! I have had to disable automatic updates until this is fixed. I use zypper as a backend because with packagekit backend I only get notifications of patches and security updates. Thomas, does KDE updater keeps the settings of 11.0? Due to the rename from kde4-opensuse-updater (11.0) to kde4-kupdateapplet (11.1) is doesn't use the old settings.

This is a really serious bug that has caused more than a little grief. It's a core system component (zypper) in a common run mode (either kupdateapplet or via a cron job), *both* of which were supported in opensuse 11.0 and 10.3. Thus, people who upgrade may be surprised to find their machine no longer works properly, won't let them log in, is sluggish, etc... If the fix is urgent for you, install the zypper package from project devel:updatestack zypper for 11.1, however you have to be aware this will change the vendor and you will need to manually change the package to the openSUSE version later if you want the official updates. This has now happened to me on 3 systems. At least I saw it coming on the 3rd and killed zypper (started by kupdateapplet) after zypper.log was almost 12 GB.
