[Bug 209358] New: If NM is used, network related services should be started via the dispatcher scripts rather than during boot

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=209358 Summary: If NM is used, network related services should be started via the dispatcher scripts rather than during boot Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mboman@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Would it be possible to put all network related services as NM dispatcher scripts when NM is in use. Services such as sshd, portmap, mdnsd etc are useless until there is a network connection and moving them there could improve boot times. To make it compatable with netapplet, perhaps netapplet could be modified to look in that directory whenever a network connection has been established. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But as result a lot of other things will not work anymore as experience with 10.1/CODE10 shows. As result we made already the first services NM aware and the final goal can only be to do this with all problematic services. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=209358 ------- Comment #2 from mboman@novell.com 2006-10-02 06:21 MST ------- What will not work? Do we have another bug report, or documentation, that shows what would break? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=209358 ------- Comment #3 from kukuk@novell.com 2006-10-02 06:24 MST ------- What not will work depends on what you wish to do. There is no bug report, but for documentation you can read nearly every documentation of every service we ship. Else this is all knowledge and experience of the experts or customer feedback. For example, if you don't start always portmap, autofs and ypbind will not work anymore. But at least ypbind works great togehter with NM. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=209358 ------- Comment #4 from mboman@novell.com 2006-10-02 06:33 MST ------- Isn't it at least worth a try? If you know that portmap have to be started, even though there is no real network connection, don't move it. But you found out that ypbind works, so move that. It must be possible to try to find out the same regarding sshd etc? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=209358 ------- Comment #5 from kukuk@novell.com 2006-10-02 06:37 MST ------- No, it is not worth a try if we know there will be trouble. We moved quite some services in 10.1/CODE10 and it didn't work for any of them. Moving ypbind did not work, so we implemented NM support to ypbind and don't move it. There was a discussion on research about this, the biggest problem is that the dispatcher service of NM does not support what for most applications is necessary to have a chance to get it working (especially correct order of starting/shutdown). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
