I made a mistake - I let sax2 create the xorg.conf with module "radeon" - this worked, but 5mins after my reply I saw this misconfiguration and changed to "radeonhd" - after restarting X I had a freezing X again. I am not an expert concerning display drivers so I am not sure if I should use radeon or radeonhd for my HW - if you need further testing please let me know. In 2D everything is fine - when enabling desktop effects X still freezes. OTOH, as the radeon driver doesn't seem to crash, radeonhd is apparently still doing something wrong/different to radeon. Using the radeon driver is a reasonable workaround if it works for you. I'm using a server I assembled myself with a Radeon HD 2400 XT (PCI ID 1002:94c1). No flickering, no artefacts. I've installed the newest version 1.3.0_20091124_6387ab4-15.5 and a new Mesa from here (1-Click) http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/X11:XOrg/openSUSE_11.2/Mesa.ymp Just be sure to remove every parts from fglrx - I had some troubles with some fglrx files in lib dirs which I tried to install a few weeks ago.
