[Bug 383895] New: network init script takes IP address away at start when interface is already up
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=383895 Summary: network init script takes IP address away at start when interface is already up Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andi-nbz@firstfloor.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- For debugging a kernel I use an early configured netconsole. That forces the network interface up with a static address before the normal startup scripts run. Now the same interface is configured with yast2 to the same static address. The problem is that when the network init script runs during boot it actually takes the already configured address away and the machine ends up with no IP connectivity. When I manually do a rcnetwork restart it works again. The network script really shouldn't touch the interface when the correct IP is already configured. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think the problem stems from that udev tries to rename the interface to one of the usual crazy names (eth5; no idea how it comes up with that) and that fails and then rcnetwork decides to down all other interfaces.
AFAIK there is no rcnetwork / ifup / ifdown code that "decides to down all other interfaces".
I don't think it should really down them. Why does it touch eth0 at all in this case?
It looks like some udev rule problem to me... Christian, can you help? Andi, can you attach your /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file and provide more detailed informations about your setup / machine, please? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
