[Bug 222678] New: VNC installation results in failure
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222678 Summary: VNC installation results in failure Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jeffm@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I was installing beta2 with a serial console and video over VNC. I chose graphical environment: text-mode and used the defaults other than selecting "C/C++ Development" and "Kernel Development." The system rebooted normally to complete the installation, and the installation halted with the following. Since this was done over serial console, there was no Alt-F2 to obtain a command line. Control-C halted the installation and completed the boot. Since the installation was interrupted, the system was obviously unusable. ------>8-------- *** *** Please return to your X-Server screen to finish installation *** starting VNC server... The behavior in this situation is well defined. Text-only systems doesn't allow any X-Server access. This happens intentionally otherwise we have to install the Xvnc server and almost all X11 libraries which means it is not a text-only system anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This isn't WORKSFORME. If you do the same thing, you'll get the same results. It's perfectly happy to let me shoot myself in the foot on this without the slighest bit of warning. *That* is a bug. If I'm in the middle of a VNC install, perhaps it just shouldn't allow text-only, or at the very least, have a popup indicating why it won't work. Otherwise, it happily goes through installing the system, wasting my time, until it's time to continue the installation and it falls on its face. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222678 ------- Comment #7 from sndirsch@novell.com 2006-11-22 12:08 MST ------- I agree that for a vnc installation Xvnc and all depending libs should be installed, otherwise the installation cannot be continued via VNC after the reboot. There should be a hardcoded package list for a vnc installation in YaST2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
